Biography
Here are some of the things I’ve done:
I was editor of rabble.ca, Canada’s most-read on-line progressive news publication. rabble.ca publishes news and commentary that explores issues from a perspective which is different from the corporate media – or looks at issues which are ignored by the corporate media.
I was a co-editor of Canadian Housing, a national magazine dealing with issues around social housing including affordability, homelessness.
I have been a semi-regular columnist with Catholic New Times, a progressive newspaper and a regular contributor and frequent columnist for Spotlight, an English-language magazine published in Munich, Germany, dealing with political, cultural and social issues in Canada.
As a freelance journalist, I was a frequent participant on political panels for CBC Radio and a contributor to CBC Commentary. I was a regular contributor to regional and national publications, including This Magazine, The Canadian Forum and Catholic New Times. I was an occasional commentator for CTV, Newsworld, and provided commentaries for both regional and national publications. I specialized in women's issues, fishery, culture and politics.
I was a contributor to the book Crossing That Bridge: A Critical Look at the P.E.I. Fixed Link with a chapter on privatization of the Strait crossing (Published by Ragweed Publications) and a contributor to A Woman's Almanac, a product of East Coast Women and Words, with profiles of three Nova Scotia women each year from 1992 until 1996. I was editor of Atlantic Insight, Atlantic Canada's major magazine of news, features and opinion dealing with issues in the region. I was also editor, of Ray Guy's Best, selections from Ray Guy's humour column in Atlantic Insight.
I was the founding editor of Atlantic Fisherman, a newspaper that covered the commercial fishing industry in Atlantic provinces.
I was a lecturer at the university level in both journalism and women’s studies departments.
I was a columnist with the Halifax Daily News – columns about women's issues, and issues of general interest, including politics, the fishing industry, education, culture. Earlier, I had been a weekly columnist syndicated to P.E.I. and New Brunswick community newspapers covering issues of interest to small town and rural women.
I worked as a Current Affairs CBC Radio writer/broadcaster, doing stories of political, social, economic and artistic interest.
I was editor of the Miramichi Leader/Weekend, an award-winning community newspaper in New Brunswick.
I have also done a lot of public speaking and have acted as a judge in journalism competitions, both regional and national.
I trained as a nurse at the Montreal General Hospital and, in my first career, I worked as a nurse at Montreal hospitals.
